MANILA, Philippines — Malacanang launched Friday a new breed of battery-powered commuter bus to help mitigate the effects of climate change.

Dubbed the Electronic Bus (eBus), the environment-friendly transport vehicle produces no greenhouse gas (GHG), which was made possible through the “Victory Against Climate Change” program of the Office of the President’s Climate Change Commission, in partnership with Victory Liner, one of the leading transportation operators in the country. Executive Secretary Paquito Ochoa Jr. led the launch.

“We are looking at the eBus as one of the vehicles that will carry government efforts to address the causes of climate change,” Ochoa, who himself turned on the ignition key of the bus and drove it around Malacanang grounds during the launching, said in a statement. “The use of gasoline or diesel in our vehicles has been identified by science as one of the causes of climate change as it produces carbon dioxide, one of the major GHG in our atmosphere.”

The bus runs on 400V "Winston" rare-earth Yttrium Lithium-ion battery, has a maximum speed of 90 kilometers per hour (kph) and can carry 26 passengers. In addition to being environmentally-conscious, its fleet will be independent of oil, and thus would not be affected by fare hikes.

Climate Change Commissioner and Vice Chairperson Mary Ann Lucille Sering said that the use of battery-powered vehicles is one of the strategies under the National Climate Change Action Plan (NCCAP) to help reduce the emission of greenhouse gases, which include engaging domestic transport companies. The said partnership is expected to encourage more transportation companies to follow suit.

The Victory Liner will help promote climate change consciousness by designating several of its provincial buses to carry advertisement on climate change at no cost to the government.
